City meeting with stakeholders about redevelopment of Strand Street Quarry site

The City of Cape Town
hosted a constructive meeting with stakeholders about the proposed
redevelopment of the Strand Street Quarry site in Bo-Kaap on Wednesday, 22
March 2023. Once the proposal has been finalised, the City will embark on a
public participation process to also give residents and interested and affected
parties an opportunity to submit comments.
The proposal is to develop the Strand Street Quarry, located between the Bo-Kaap and Strand Street, as a community sports and recreation facility with infrastructure that supports tourism and employment opportunities.
'Over the past few months, officials from the City's Urban Catalytic Investment Department collected relevant information that will inform the redevelopment of the Strand Street Quarry site and immediate surroundings. Previous consultation processes related to the draft local spatial development framework for Bo-Kaap and the Bo-Kaap Tourism Framework indicated that this strategic site could be developed as a community sport and recreation facility, and to combine the surrounding heritage and tourism assets with this proposed development in the interest of job creation and economic opportunities for the local community,' said the City's Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.
The stakeholder information session took place on Wednesday morning, 22 March 2023, where local community-based organisations and other parties identified needs, opportunities and challenges that should be considered as part of the process.
'The local community-based organisations and civic organisations of Bo-Kaap have intimate knowledge of the site and the community's needs and aspirations. The surrounding area hosts numerous sites of historic, religious and cultural value and as such, we will also source input from heritage conservation bodies to assist with their knowledge, insight, and expertise,' said Alderman Andrews.
The comments and proposals submitted during the stakeholder meeting will be considered in the roll-out of the process. It is anticipated that more engagements will follow in coming months to guide the City's efforts to prepare a development vision.
Once the stakeholder engagements have been concluded and the development vision finalised, the City will follow the necessary statutory processes to enable the redevelopment of the Strand Street Quarry site. It is during this phase that the general public, local residents, and all interested and affected parties will have the opportunity to also submit their comments on the proposals.
'This is a very exciting project. I think all will agree that the Strand Street Quarry site has significant potential and that it has been left unused and neglected for way too long. We now have the opportunity to collaborate with focus groups to create something special that will benefit the Bo-Kaap community and Capetonians in the years ahead,' said Alderman Andrews.
The City will keep the public informed as this process unfolds.
